In industry, electric motors often work for years under demanding conditions: dust, humidity, vibrations, high temperatures and continuous operation. In sugar mills, citrus plants or production lines, basic periodic maintenance can make the difference between reliable operation and an unexpected shutdown.

Although the focus is often on the panel or the general electrical installation, the condition of the motor also directly impacts the safety, performance and service life of the system.

What does basic industrial electric motor maintenance include?

In industrial work, it is common to perform preventive tasks aimed at keeping the motor in good operating condition, even without intervening in the internal winding.

Among the most common tasks are:

  • General cleaning of the motor and its external components.
  • Revision and reconditioning of the wiring.
  • Control of connections and terminals.
  • Painting and external protection.
  • Visual inspection of ventilation and mechanical condition.
  • Replacement of deteriorated terminals or accessories.

The importance of cleaning

Industrial paint does not serve only an aesthetic purpose. Its main objective is to protect the metal housing of the motor against environmental humidity, oxidation, chemical products, industrial dust and aggressive weather conditions.

Visual identification and order

In many industrial plants, painting motors with a uniform color makes it easier to identify maintained or reconditioned equipment, it also helps to highlight equipment manufacturers and provides visual order within electrical rooms or production areas.

Fault detection

A properly painted surface makes it easier to detect oil or grease leaks, overheated areas, impacts or cracks and premature corrosion.

Wiring and connections: a critical point

Many electrical failures do not originate in the motor itself, but in its connections. During basic maintenance, the following are usually checked:

  • Wiring condition.
  • Damaged insulation.
  • Sulfated terminals.
  • Terminal tightening.
  • Moisture ingress in junction boxes.

A bad contact can cause heating, voltage drops or even greater damage to the electrical system.
