In residential electrical installations, the differences between correct and truly professional work are often not in the major materials, but in the details. One of those details — frequently underestimated — is the use of cable ferrules.
It is still common to see connections made with the cable simply stripped and tightened under the screw. It works, yes. But is it the best in terms of safety, efficiency and durability? Spoiler: no.
What are cable ferrules?
Ferrules are small metal tubes (usually tinned copper) that are placed on the stripped end of a conductor and fixed with a crimping tool. Their function is to organize, compact and protect the wire strands before making the connection.
They are especially recommended for multi-strand cables, which are the most commonly used in residential installations and panels.
Connections with bare wire: what happens in practice
When we connect a stripped multi-strand cable directly to a terminal block or switch:
- Some strands get cut or crushed when tightening the screw.
- The effective cross-section of the conductor is reduced, increasing resistance.
- Over time, the copper can loosen, oxidize or heat up.
- False contacts, micro-arcs and hot spots appear.
All of this is not always visible, but it is paid for: in failures, maintenance or complaints.

Greater electrical efficiency
- All strands are compacted and working together.
- Better electrical contact → lower resistance → less heating.
More safety
- Prevents wire fraying.
- The connection is firm and stable over time.
- Less risk of sparks, arcs or false contacts.
Greater durability
- The connection withstands vibrations, re-tightening and the passage of time better.
- Ideal for panels, sockets, breakers, RCDs and terminal blocks.
Aesthetics also matter (a lot)
This point is often overlooked, but for the residential electrician it is key.
A panel or box with well-aligned cables, with ferrules in the correct color according to cross-section, with no loose strands, conveys order, professionalism and neatness.
The client may not know what a ferrule is, but they do know when a job "looks well done." And that builds trust, justifies the value of the service and increases recommendations.
Professionalizing the trade, even in everyday work
Using ferrules is not just for industrial panels. It is a simple practice that raises the standard of daily work: in a thermal breaker, in an outlet, in a junction box, in a residential panel. It is going from "it works" to "it is well done".
