Electric heaters: consumption and what to check before buying

When cold weather arrives, many people turn to electric heaters because they are practical, require no complex installation and are easily available. But one detail is often overlooked: electrical consumption and the condition of the installation where they will be used.

Before buying, it is worth understanding these two points well to avoid surprises on the bill, electrical problems at home or something more dangerous.

How much does an electric heater consume?

Consumption depends on power. Most electric heaters range from 1000W to 2500W.

To get a concrete idea, a 2000W (2 kW) heater used 5 hours per day for 30 days gives an approximate consumption of 300 kWh per month.

This can have a significant impact on the electricity bill, especially if it is used every day or in several rooms.

Key point: two heaters of the same power consume practically the same, even if one claims to be "more efficient." The real difference is in how they distribute heat, not in electrical consumption.

What to check in your electrical installation before using a heater

This point is fundamental and is often not taken into account. An electric heater is a high-consumption device. If the installation is not in good condition, it can cause anything from breaker trips to dangerous overheating.

Wiring

Old installations or those with thin cables may not be prepared to sustain that consumption for several hours.

Protections

It is important to have:

  • A suitable thermal breaker
  • A working residual current device (RCD)

If the breaker trips frequently when using the heater, it is no coincidence: the circuit may be at its limit.

Plugs and sockets

  • Avoid extensions or power strips
  • Check that the plug is not loose
  • Do not use sockets that have already overheated
  • If you smell plastic or notice the plug getting hot, stop and check

Types of electric heaters (and what to expect from each)

Although consumption is similar, not all of them work the same way:

Fan heater

Heats quickly, but consumes quite a bit and is not ideal for continuous use.

Panel heater

More stable for maintaining temperature in small or medium rooms.

Mini split AC (heat pump)

This is one of the most efficient options today. Unlike a common electric heater, it does not generate heat directly through a resistor, but rather "moves" it from the outside through a heat pump system. This means that for every kW it consumes, it delivers more heat than other electrical equipment.

Tips to save electricity

  • Keep the room closed
  • Avoid drafts
  • Use the thermostat if the equipment has one
  • Do not leave it at maximum all the time
  • Turn it off when no one is around

Installation also matters

Many times the problem is not the heater, but the installation. A properly sized circuit prevents overloads, reduces risks and allows you to use the equipment with greater peace of mind.

If in doubt, the most recommended approach is to get a checkup before starting to use electric heating intensively.

  • The monthly consumption
  • The condition of the installation
  • The type of heater according to use
